Tasks for the experts
Presentation and assessment of the scientific level of knowledge on possible health impacts of mobile telephones

1.
In a first step, the scientific literature should be reviewed with respect to investigation results of significance for the assessment of possible health impacts by mobile phone fields. From all the studies found, approx. 100 should then be named which the expert regards as particularly relevant for assessing the health effects of mobile phones. In particular, health-relevant effects on humans and animals as well as on the cellular level should be contained:

  • triggering and promotion of cancerous diseases,
  • influences on the nervous system and the brain function,
  • influences on behaviour,
  • control of the permeability of the blood-brain barrier,
  • influences on the cardiovascular system,
  • deteriorations of the immune system,
  • disturbances of reproduction and embryonic development, effects at the cellular level such as influences on gene expression, gene toxicity, cell communication, cell proliferation, enzyme activities.

2.
In a second step, the selected 100 key studies should be assessed. Assessment criteria should be:

  • the relevance to health of the effects identified (including transferability to humans),
  • the suitability of the model/research object,
  • the suitability and correct application of the investigation method,
  • the correct determination and documentation of the investigation conditions (exposure, other influences, pretreatment etc.)
  • the reliability of the results (replication of the investigation, validation by other investigations and theoretical models, the publication in a recognized specialist journal).
3.
Finally, based on the assessment of the selected studies, the health risks of mobile phone fields to humans should be assessed, corroborating the statements on risks by means of the studies assessed. Moreover, a possible demand for research against the background of the results from the first two assessment steps should be formulated. The project should include a detailed documentation of the individual steps.
